Author: Michael Garrity

Michael Garrity is executive director of the Alliance for the Wild Rockies. A native of Helena, he is a fifth-generation Montanan whose ancestors arrived in Virginia City in 1863. Garrity earned an undergraduate degree in history and economics from the University of Montana in Missoula in the early 1980s, where he first engaged with environmental issues by observing the local lumber industry’s impacts on forests and communities. Later, he pursued graduate studies in economics at UM, influenced by noted natural resource economist Dr. Thomas Power. Pursuing PhD coursework at the University of Utah, he taught environmental economics as an adjunct instructor.
